The focal point of Apostrophe, number 2, is Syamacharan Ganguli’s famous critique of Sanskritization of Bengali in colonial Bengal (1877), along with an anti-critique by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee in Bangadarshan (1878) and Syamacharan’s rejoinder (1905).
Salimullah Khan’s modest introduction to Syamacharan, besides, brings in Nawab Abdul Luteef’s ‘Evidence’ before the Bengal Provincial Committee of the Indian Education Commission (1882) headed by W. W. Hunter, hitherto largely overlooked.
